Must Know: How to Prepare for an Echocardiogram

Learn how to prepare for an echocardiogram, who needs one, what the test shows about your heart and what to expect after the exam is done.

Must Know: How to Prepare for an Echocardiogram

Heart abnormalities can be detected early using special methods and equipment. One method that can check for problems with the heart's structure, blood flow, blood vessels and the heart muscle's ability to pump blood is echocardiography. Before you undergo this procedure, though, there are a few things to prepare.

Why an Echocardiogram Matters

An echocardiogram is a method for examining the heart in detail. It is usually needed for several purposes, such as evaluating overall heart function, assessing how heart valve problems are progressing, determining whether heart disease is present and evaluating how well medical treatment or surgery is working.

Who Needs an Echocardiogram

This procedure is an examination that takes a detailed look  at the structure of the heart and the blood vessels around it. This exam and scan help doctors make an accurate diagnosis and monitor the patient's heart condition.

The exam is also useful for looking specifically at blood flow through the heart. An echocardiogram also checks how well the heart can pump blood throughout the body, so a range of heart conditions can be detected accurately.

For example, echocardiography can diagnose damage caused by a heart attack. It can also detect when blood flow to the heart has suddenly stopped. On top of that, heart failure, in which the heart can't pump blood effectively throughout the body, can also be assessed with this method.

How to Prepare for an Echocardiogram

There are a few things you need to prepare before undergoing this exam. To prepare for an echocardiogram, start by asking your doctor about the exam. Then don't forget to tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking.

If you have a pacemaker, let your doctor know about your condition. Also avoid applying lotion, cream or oil to your chest area. And if you have chest hair, it's a good idea to shave it before the exam.

Echocardiogram Results

Echocardiogram results help detect several heart abnormalities, including changes in heart size, problems with the heart's pumping function and even damage to the heart muscle. That way, you can get better treatment for your heart condition and avoid unwanted complications.

Echocardiography can also help doctors see the condition of the heart valves, for example whether the valves are still  working properly, opening and closing as they should. Just as important, this procedure can also detect whether congenital heart disease is present.

After the exam, no special care is actually needed. Patients are free to eat normally and go about their daily activities as usual. Even so, the doctor will give the best advice to help the patient stay healthy. If you care about your heart, you can trust Heartology with it.
