5 Types of Highly Nutritious Broiler Chicken Feed

Feed has a major effect on how broiler chickens grow and develop on the farm, because what a bird eats is converted into meat. That is why a flock's productivity depends heavily on the type of feed it gets. Poultry farmers need to pay close attention to feed: don't just fill the birds up, but make sure the feed is highly nutritious so productivity keeps improving. Several types of feed can be given to broiler chickens. Beyond boosting productivity, they can also make the birds healthier and stronger. Here are the types of broiler chicken feed you can use on your farm:

Contents
  1. Sorghum
  2. Pollard
  3. Rice Bran
  4. Meals and Flours
  5. Pellets

Sorghum

Sorghum can be hard to find because it is only grown in certain areas. It is very good for chickens' digestive health thanks to its high fiber content. In Indonesia, sorghum goes by several local names, including tojeng, cantrik and centel.

Pollard

Farmers looking to make alternative feed can consider this option. Relying on commercial feed all the time can drive up a coop's operating costs. Pollard is a by-product of wheat processing, the same wheat that is usually milled into flour, and is also known as wheat bran. Pollard is very good for the health of broiler chickens because it is rich in fat and protein and high in fiber. It is also fairly high in calories, which keeps the birds active and energetic every day. Despite its rich nutrient content, pollard should not be fed every day because that is not good for the birds. Alternate it with other types of broiler feed instead.

Rice Bran

Rice bran is also known locally as bekatul. This feed is well known among poultry farmers, not only broiler farmers but also those raising other breeds such as kampung chickens (Indonesian free-range native chickens), layers and more. Its high amino acid content gives rice bran a fairly high calorie value, and it is also rich in fat. The downside of rice bran is that it clumps easily and can turn rancid. Feed that smells rancid should no longer be given to chickens because its quality has dropped. So if you want to use rice bran, don't buy it in bulk; buy just enough so it doesn't go rancid from sitting too long in the farm's storeroom.

Meals and Flours

One of the best types of broiler feed for day-old chicks (DOC) is meal or flour. Its fine texture makes it easy for DOC to digest. Several kinds of meal can be fed to broiler chickens. Bone meal is one example. It can be obtained from chicken slaughterhouses or other animal slaughterhouses, and it is rich in calcium and phosphorus, which are good for the birds' bones and joints. Besides bone meal, you can also give fish meal, which is made from dried fish ground into a fine powder.

Pellets

Pellets are the type of feed chickens like best. Pelleted feed is more economical and efficient because it is highly nutritious. Pellets go further than meal-based feed, making them a good fit for farmers who want feed that saves money and offers better value.
