How to Build a Chick Coop for Day-Old Chicks: 6 Tips

Day-old chicks (DOC) need a different coop from birds in the grower phase, because their small bodies require special care and special housing. The chicks will not survive if their coop and feed are not suited to their needs. That is why, as a poultry farmer, you need to know how to build a good coop for your chicks. Before you raise DOC, learn how to build that coop the right way. Here are several points to keep in mind when building a DOC coop:

Keep It Away From Residential Areas

The first thing to consider when building a dedicated DOC coop is distance from residential areas. Many residents object to having a chicken farm nearby, because the waste pollutes the environment and makes the area around their homes smell. So build your DOC coop away from where people live. If needed, before you set up a chicken farm, ask the neighbors for permission and find out how they would feel about it. You will need the approval of the surrounding community, especially to make your farm legal. Once it is legal, no one can forcibly shut your business down.

Coop Safety

The next thing to look at is the safety and soundness of the coop. Make sure the coop you use for the chicks does not leak, because standing water inside can leave the chicks chilled. Chilled chicks get sick easily. Check whether the roof leaks, whether there are gaps that let water pool, and so on.

Raised Coop

A good, proper way to build a DOC coop is to make it a raised coop that sits above the ground. This keeps the DOC coop dry and stops moisture from the soil seeping in.

Use Cheap Materials

The next point to keep in mind is to build the coop from inexpensive materials. This matters because if part of the coop breaks, you can replace it right away without spending much. A DOC coop is only temporary, since the birds will be moved to a larger coop once they reach the next growth stage.

Line the Coop Floor

Another point to watch when building a chicken coop is the floor, which you should line with newspaper or sawdust. This helps the chicks' droppings dry quickly. When droppings dry fast, the ammonia smell is less pungent. Replace newspaper or sawdust bedding that is wet or heavily soiled with fresh material to keep the coop free of disease, including bacteria.

Control the Temperature

Temperature is important to watch, since a coop that is too cold makes chicks prone to disease. Cold can also kill chicks easily. So make sure the temperature inside the coop stays warm, neither too cold nor too hot. You can install a light bulb inside the DOC coop.
