How to Choose the Right Broiler Chicken Breeder

Choosing a broiler chicken breeder? Learn why trusted breeders deliver better DOC, uniform weights and healthier, higher-quality broiler meat.

How to Choose the Right Broiler Chicken Breeder

Producing quality broiler chickens takes complete, thorough care from the day-old chick (DOC) stage until the birds are ready for slaughter or harvest. That care largely decides whether a chicken farming operation succeeds, and it shapes the quality of the meat as well. When choosing DOC, it is better to select or buy them directly from a trusted breeder, since that gives you the best guarantee of chick quality. High-quality broiler DOC usually come from the breeder's own hatchery. The broilers are also raised with close attention and on proven feed to support maximum growth.

Choosing the Right Breeder

Broilers that are raised carefully from DOC until they reach slaughter weight grow to a uniform weight and size. Uniform weight and size in turn produce a high-quality chicken carcass whose health is also assured. With a trusted breeder whose quality is proven, you can usually choose broilers by your preferred weight. That means you can order and harvest birds at the weight and size you want.

Broiler Chicken Traits

Broiler chickens are prone to infection, so make sure you pick birds raised in a clean, healthy coop to be confident they are healthy. Confirm with the poultry farmer that the chickens you choose are vaccinated regularly. Feed also needs close attention, because broilers grow fast and absorb nutrients quickly. The feed provided must meet the nutritional needs of broiler chickens so the birds develop good meat quality and stay healthy. Broilers also have a hard time adjusting to their coop environment, especially a new one. That is why poultry farmers need to keep the birds' stress levels under control, so their appetite does not drop and their health does not suffer.

Broiler Meat Quality

Broilers that are ready for market, or already processed into carcasses, weigh no more than 2 kilograms and no less than 1.5 kilograms. At harvest, each broiler should be carefully weighed and checked for health to get the best-quality chicken meat. In terms of texture, broiler meat is of course different from kampung chicken (Indonesian free-range native chicken). The defining trait of broiler meat is that it is more tender and softer than kampung chicken meat.

When you buy or order broiler chickens, keep the points above in mind. Choose DOC from a trusted breeder so the meat quality and health of the birds are assured. It also helps to understand broiler traits, so you can make sure the birds are raised in a way that suits their nature. At harvest, check the birds again, from body weight to overall health, so broiler quality is fully assured from the DOC stage all the way to harvest.
