Raising Broiler Chickens: A Guide for Beginners

Much of what you learn about raising chickens comes from experience. The more experience you build, the more your business will grow. Beginners, however, have not yet learned the ropes of chicken farming, so they should ask farmers with more experience. Down-to-earth farmers will not hesitate to share what they know with newcomers. Before asking more specific technical questions, a beginner should first master the basics of raising broiler chickens, as outlined below:

Chicks

The first step in raising broiler chickens is choosing the right, high-quality chicks. Good chicks are vital to your farming business because the quality of the meat you produce depends on them. Beginners are strongly advised to learn the signs of high-quality day-old chicks (DOC) first. Good chicks are healthy and active, with plump bodies, thick and glossy feathers, clean nostrils, bright eyes and a clean vent. Sick chicks show watery, cloudy eyes, a vent caked with droppings, sparse feathers and lethargy, and they tend to keep their eyes closed.

The Right Type of Coop

To raise broiler chickens, you need to choose the right coop. Today you can choose between a raised (stilt) coop and a regular floor coop. Whichever type you choose, make it ideal: it should have good air circulation, stay warm, be protected from rain and direct sunlight, and have good waste management. Waste is easier to handle in a raised coop because fish are usually kept underneath to break it down. Unfortunately, it costs more to build than a regular coop.

Health Management

It is very important for beginners to know how to manage chicken health properly. Pay close attention to your flock's health, because some diseases can spread from chickens to humans. There are several ways to keep both the chickens and the farmer healthy. The first is biosecurity, which means wearing a mask, gloves, coveralls and boots. After handling poultry, wash your hands with disinfectant so that no germs or bacteria enter your body.

The next part of health management is giving vaccines and vitamins so the chickens' immune systems stay stable. Vaccines can be given in several ways: eye drops, nose drops, injections and spraying. Chickens should receive a complete vaccination program for maximum protection against disease.

Coop Hygiene

Besides building an ideal coop, you must always keep it clean. To clean it, wash the coop with plain water, spray it with disinfectant and then let it dry in the sun. Cleaning the coop on a regular schedule keeps the chickens healthy and protects them from all kinds of bacteria and germs.
