Besides buying chicken in pieces, you can also buy it as a whole bird that has already been plucked, had its head and feet removed and had its internal organs cleaned out. That is what a chicken carcass actually is: the chicken without its head, feet, feathers or giblets. A carcass can come as one whole, uncut bird or as separate pieces such as the head, legs, breast and thighs. These carcasses are what usually get cooked into the many dishes that make up everyday meals.

Before it is cooked, a chicken carcass is usually stored first. Now that you know what a chicken carcass is, it also helps to know how to store chicken meat properly. Storing it in a way that suits the cut keeps the meat in good condition until you are ready to cook it.

  1. Storing a Whole Chicken Carcass

When storing a whole chicken carcass, keep the giblets separate from the rest of the bird. This keeps the meat fresh and helps it last longer. Next, pat the chicken dry with kitchen paper or a clean, dry cloth. Trim off any fat, then wrap the chicken in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator or freezer.

  1. Storing Cut Chicken Pieces

Strictly speaking, a chicken carcass is a whole bird. Still, carcasses are often sold in pieces. If the chicken you plan to store is cut chicken, divide the pieces into portions. This makes cooking easier and helps you avoid too many leftovers.

Chicken pieces that have been cut and divided into portions can be kept in the refrigerator or the freezer. In the refrigerator the meat will only keep for 1 day, while in the freezer it will last up to 7 days.

Now that you know what a chicken carcass is and how to store it, there are a few things to keep in mind before cooking frozen meat. Frozen chicken should not go straight into the pan without being thawed first, as follows:

  1. Take the chicken out of the freezer about 2-3 hours before cooking.
  1. For better results, do not soak frozen chicken in water, because it will make the meat tough.
  2. Keep the chicken in its plastic wrapping while it thaws. This protects the meat from bacteria and other contamination.

Knowing what a chicken carcass is and how to store it helps ensure that the meat you cook is still good quality, even after time in the refrigerator or freezer.
